The book shows Gregory's indebtedness to classical culture as well as to Christian tradition, and compares his early understanding of the stages of the spiritual life with that in his later treatises. It has never been translated into a modern language, nor been the subject of a monograph ... Thus Heine's book fills a real gap in the otherwise rich scholarship on Gregory of Nyssa ... We should be grateful to Heine for his valuable addition to the rich harvest of studies on Gregory of Nyssa.
