Stephen Crane (1871?1900) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet, widely regarded as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. Writing in the traditions of literary realism and naturalism, he is best known for his 1895 masterpiece, The Red Badge of Courage, which he wrote without ever having experienced actual combat. Crane worked as a journalist and war correspondent, surviving a famous shipwreck that inspired his classic short story, The Open Boat.
