James Ryan is an AI safety researcher, strategist, and writer based in Boston, Massachusetts, who serves as Senior Advisor for AI Safety at the Keep AI Safe Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to protecting vulnerable populations, particularly children, from the risks of artificial intelligence. He has led the Foundation's research efforts to test the safety of AI toys and other AI products intended for use by children, as well as the broader impacts of AI on childhood development. A panelist at the International Association for Safe and Ethical AI's 2026 conference at UNESCO in Paris and a speaker at Harvard Kennedy School's inaugural AI Policy Symposium, he is also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Business and Artificial Intelligence and a longtime mentor at Harvard Innovation Labs. Ryan is a graduate of Harvard University (AB '93) and holds an MS in Communication Theory from Osaka University.
