Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) wrote to keep the history of a partitioned Poland alive, and was translated so widely that the Nobel committee cited him in 1905. He built this novel out of Tacitus, and it gave the cinema its template for the Roman epic three decades before there was one.
