Zusammenfassung

What happens when a ruler begins to mistake public office for personal ownership, and an entire nation must decide whether silence is survival or surrender?

In "The Shadow of the Mansa," Gambian writer Sulayman Jeng crafts a powerful political allegory set in the fictional West African nation of Kankary Kunda. The Mansa rules from his carved throne beneath the great baobab, declaring that every river, field, and tree belongs to him. He threatens his people with poverty, silence, and disappearance. And for a time, fear holds the country in its grip.

But fear is a heavy chain, and chains break when enough people pull together.

Saloum and Musukoi watch the Mansa's threats unfold on television from their living room, their children at their feet. When the police come for Saloum, Musukoi does not look away. Across the country, Mbarodi, a Fulani goldsmith, falls in love with Jabou, a banker's daughter whose father sees only ethnicity and trade where there should be character and heart. And Corporal Silabali, a police officer sworn to protect, must decide whether his uniform serves the people or the tyrant.

Through interwoven stories of arrest, resistance, forbidden love, and collective action, Jeng examines how authoritarianism infiltrates the most intimate corners of life, and how ordinary people, frightened, wounded, and uncertain, discover that courage can be built together.

This is not a story of flawless heroes. It is a story of neighbours, parents, lovers, and officers who choose, despite their fear, to recognise another person's dignity.

If you are drawn to African literary fiction, political allegories of resistance, cross-cultural romance, and narratives that explore the responsibilities shared by leaders and citizens, this novel will stay with you long after the final page.
