## About the Author: Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky (1821-1881) was one of the greatest novelists in world literature, renowned for his profound exploration of human psychology, moral conflict, faith, freedom, and the search for meaning. Born in Moscow, Russia, on November 11, 1821, he grew up in a family shaped by religious tradition and his father's work as a physician at a hospital for the poor. From an early age, he developed a deep interest in literature and the complexities of the human condition.

Dostoyevsky's life was marked by extraordinary hardship and personal transformation. In 1849, he was arrested for his involvement with a group that discussed social and political reform. Sentenced to death, he faced a firing squad before receiving a last-minute reprieve. His sentence was commuted to penal labor in Siberia, where years of suffering profoundly influenced his understanding of human nature, justice, suffering, and spiritual redemption.

After returning to literary life, Dostoyevsky produced some of the most influential works in modern literature, including *Crime and Punishment*, *The Idiot*, *Demons*, and *The Brothers Karamazov*. His writing combines psychological intensity with philosophical and spiritual questions, portraying characters torn between good and evil, belief and doubt, pride and humility.

Published as part of *The Brothers Karamazov* in 1880, *The Grand Inquisitor* remains one of his most celebrated philosophical passages. Through an imagined confrontation between Jesus Christ and a powerful religious authority, Dostoyevsky examines the uneasy relationship between freedom, faith, institutional power, and humanity's desire for certainty.

Dostoyevsky died in Saint Petersburg on February 9, 1881. His literary legacy continues to influence writers, philosophers, theologians, and readers around the world. More than a century later, his work endures because it confronts questions that remain deeply relevant: What does it mean to be free? Can faith survive doubt? And what sacrifices are we willing to make in the pursuit of security and truth?
